Hi Everyone! Well, it is Sunday evening and still cold here. Yep, in fact, it is snowing right now…again. Great big, fat flakes are coming down. Old Man Winter just will not take a hike. Everybody I know is aching to get outdoors and start gardening or longing to open the windows and let the fresh air inside. I can’t wait for that. I love the smell of the spring flowers and grass and I love to hear the frogs chirping. But for now, we can only wait it out. My dad always says, “We’ll take what they give us.”
This Sunday we decided to have a big noon meal rather than evening meal so that our sons could get on the road back to their own homes before the snow began. The older one, Cody, did just that but the younger one, Alex, decided to hang out with some friends for a while. But, they were both gone from my house by mid-afternoon and because we had already eaten a big fried chicken meal at noon I thought that the husband and I would just have sandwiches for supper. Since it is still so stinking cold I decided to have some baked sandwiches. I really like sandwiches of all kinds. I really, really like sliders of all kinds. I am absolutely sure that there are more slider recipes coming your way from me in the near future. These particular sliders are my variation on the baked version that begin with dinner rolls and have a butter sauce poured over the top. I have always enjoyed seeing these types of sliders show up at potlucks. I took my favorite parts of all the types that I had eaten and added my own spice preference to make these ooey-gooey morsels.
Steak-Seasoned Sliders are super easy. They come together in about 15 minutes and then bake for 25 to 30 minutes. You can also make them up the night or several hours ahead of time and store them covered in the refrigerator. Then just add the sauce and pop them in the oven when you need them. The leftovers (if there are any) keep very well in an airtight container or wrapped in foil in the frig. I plan on taking a container to Cody tomorrow since he missed out tonight. He can have them for a lunch this week.
To begin, preheat your oven to 375 degrees and spray a 9 X 13 pan with cooking spray. If you have a slightly larger pan use it. I do not and use my normal casserole pan and consequently can only fit 20 of the rolls in my dish. If you have a pan that will hold all of them, go for it. Cut your dinner rolls in half crossways as you can see in my picture.
I almost always use the savory butter flavor of the Hawaiian rolls because the sweet ones can overwhelm the flavor of the meat and cheese sometimes. You can certainly use whichever you prefer. Place the bottoms of the rolls in your pan so that they are right next to one another. They may be pretty well squished up together. That’s ok, it won’t hurt a thing.
Take your roast beef and add little piles (usually 1 slice) of beef on each bun bottom. Use all the beef, distributing it as evenly as possible over the rolls.
Next, add the layer of turkey in the same manner. The package of turkey that I had was 1 pound and I didn’t need quite all of it.
Now add the cheese. You can use any type of cheese that you like. I prefer Havarti because it has a mild flavor and melts beautifully without being too stringy. Provolone also works well in my opinion. I used ½ slice of cheese, folded in half on each sandwich. If you can fit all 24 rolls in your pan, then you will need 12 slices of cheese rather than the 10 that I used. Or you could always put 1/4 slice of cheese on a few of the sliders to make it come out right. Who’s gonna know?
Place the tops of the rolls on each sandwich. Sprinkle the steak seasoning over the tops of the sliders. I used 2 tablespoons but you can use less if you prefer.
For the sauce, melt the butter in the microwave or on the stovetop and then add the rest of the ingredients. Stir it well and pour over the sandwiches as evenly as you can. FYI, I prefer to use the McCormick Montreal Steak Seasoning but I was out when I made these sliders and so used a different brand which happened to be a bit salty. They were still good but I really prefer the McCormick brand.
Cover all of this tightly with foil and bake for 10 minutes.
Remove the foil and continue baking for 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the meat is warmed through. I always check one of the middle sliders to see if everything is hot and melty. Remove from the oven and run a knife between all the sliders to make them easier to serve.
These Steak-Seasoned Sliders go well with french fries or chips or whatever makes your tummy smile. Take them to a potluck or enjoy them with your family anytime. You don’t have to wait for a cold, snowy evening to bake them up.
Steak-Seasoned Sliders
I took my favorite parts of all the types of baked sliders that I had eaten and added my own spice preference to make these ooey-gooey morsels.
Ingredients
- 2 12 oz. packages of Hawaiian Rolls - Savory Butter or Sweet
- 12 to 13 oz. package of thinly sliced roast beef
- 12 to 13 oz. package of thinly sliced turkey breast - any flavor
- 10 to 12 slices of Havarti or Provolone cheese
- 1 cup butter, melted
- 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 Tablespoons Montreal Steak Seasoning (less if you prefer)
- 1 tsp. brown sugar
Directions
- Step 1 Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
- Step 2 Spray a 9 X 13 (or larger) cake pan or casserole dish with cooking spray.
- Step 3 Cut the rolls in halfway crossways so that you have tops and bottoms separated.
- Step 4 Place the bottom portions of the rolls in the pan so that they are tightly packed. If your pan is 9 X 13 you may only be able to get 20 roll bottoms to fit.
- Step 5 Evenly distribute the roast beef slices on each roll bottom. I usually end up with 1 slice per roll.
- Step 6 Evenly distribute the turkey slices on top of the roast beef.
- Step 7 Evenly distribute your cheese slices on top of the turkey. I tear each slice in half and then fold that in half again so that I end up with 1/2 of a slice of cheese on each roll with none hanging over the edges.
- Step 8 Place the roll tops on each newly constructed sandwich.
- Step 9 Sprinkle the steak seasoning over the tops of the sliders.
- Step 10 Melt the butter in the microwave in a glass measuring cup or in a sauce pan on the stove. Remove from the heat and add the Worcestershire sauce and brown sugar. Stir this mixture very well.
- Step 11 Pour the butter mixture over the tops of the sliders as evenly as possible.
- Step 12 Cover tightly with foil and bake for 10 minutes.
- Step 13 Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes or until the cheese has fully melted and the tops are browned.
- Step 14 Remove from the oven and use a sharp knife to separate each slider as much as possible.
